Energy Balance

Sports treatment requirements and forms

The body gains or loses fat based on energy balance.  Energy balance refers to the relationship between energy intake (eating) and energy expenditure (metabolic rate). The figures below describe the theree states of energy balance.

Normal Energy Balance
Consumption and expenditure in balance (Preferred), no weight gain or loss.

Negative Energy Balance
Expenditure is greater than consumption (caloric deficit), causes weight loss.

Positive Energy Balance
Consumption exceeds expenditure (caloric surplus), leading to weight gain.

How will the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test benefit you?

The key to weight loss is to burn more calories than are consumed. But, how much does an individual need to cut back to actually lose weight? The CardioCoach answers that question. By eating to your precise metabolic needs, you will be able to eat as many calories as possible, and still lose weight. This has 2 major benefits. First, there will be greater compliance to a healthy nutrition plan since you are not hungry or tired all the time. Second, the maintenance phase is simply a small increase in caloric intake. Thus, you will "re-learn" what it means to eat to their metabolism.

The CardioCoach report provides optional weight loss plans that are unique to each person tested. These plans specify the number of daily calories necessary for comfortable weight loss and an appropriate exercise regimen. Also included is the number of weeks that will be required to reach your goal weight.

Metabolic rate can change during a weight loss program:

Many factors can affect your metabolic rate. These factors include body composition, exercise, and diet. Changes in any or all of these factors can alter metabolic rate during the course of a weight loss regimen. Assessing the success of individual weight loss strategies can be accomplished by re-testing metabolic rate over the course of a program.
